Most couples I know fall into the stereotypical situation where the wife/girlfriend stays home because what she would otherwise earn in a month working would essentially pay for childcare. It ends up being cheaper and easier for her to stay home. Many women who try to return to work later find their career and income potential take a huge hit when they take time off to care for their children — getting them to school-age before returning to the workforce. While I don’t like it, I get that someone has to stay home with the kids.
