There are countless people this has happened to. The could have been. If only you had gone to the party, or called, or emailed, or met for coffee…where would you be now?

I have a friend who, years ago, I went to visit in DC. At the time, the visit didn’t go as planned and I returned home early. We didn’t speak for years after. We’ve since reconnected, but it was never like it was. Then, the other day, I unearthed some old postcards and letters he’d send me early on in our friendship. I texted him pics of them. He was shocked I still had them after decades. Then, he went into a little apologetic diatribe about that visit so many years ago — trying to explain what was really going on at the time and the regrets he still harbored about it. While it was ancient history, I still appreciated the effort of trying to clear up the misunderstanding.
