I’ve had a relative say — not about ME, of course, she assured me — that every person she knows who chose not to have children is selfish. Even one of my parents, before coming around to understanding how very, objectively wrong the comm…
Um, excuse me, what? Selfish….I didn’t realize my life choice was her’s to judge.
I went out with a guy friend, years ago. I was in my late 30s at the time. Didn’t have kids, nor did I want any. We accidentally ran into his sister while we were out. She is very religious, very uptight, and very much about traditional values (women get married and have kids); in her righteous opinion that is all women are good for. Anyway, I am very much the opposite. I chose not to have kids for my own very valid, very responsible reasons. A week later my guy friend reported to me how his sister warned him I would try to trap him and get pregnant by him or some random man because it was obvious I was desperate to get pregnant soon since I was getting old. Wow. I asked if he corrected her since he knows how I feel about having kids, marriage, the whole bit. No, there are some discussions not worth having. Nothing he would have said would have changed her mind. She was certain I was going to trap her brother into a pregnancy. Some people are just narrow-minded idiots making assumptions.
