What does THAT have to do with a visit to a cardiologist? I get he is the token old white guy, but what does religion (respectfully) have to do with getting medical care? He dismisses serious eating disorders and applauds the antiquated notion of “the thinner you are the better it is,” but WOW. I hope he wasn’t considering if you should pray the illness away, but suggesting you go to church more and should have had brothers to rough you up more….
I’ve had an Uber driver ask me if I was religious, but certainly NOT a medical professional. Though, I have had my share of uber-sexist white male doctors try to lecture me about my lifestyle (non-medical). Apparently, I should be married with kids and there must be something wrong with me since those were never my priorities. Ideally, I want you to be medically minded, NOT preoccupied with my spiritual affiliation, if I’m married, or lecturing me about focusing on having kids (because tick-tock) if I’m coming in over an unrelated but potentially serious medical issue. We come to you (general doctor guy) for help. You know, because you went to medical school, right? I’m not here for you to dismiss me as overreacting or to give you an opportunity to remind me about my ‘obligation to motherhood’ since I happen to have a uterus. So, I’ve gone out of my way to be as knowledgeable as I can be when it comes to a particular medical plight I might be experiencing. If I sense I’m not being taken seriously, I move along quickly to someone else. But I too fell into the trap, early on, assuming doctors were immediately someone to be trusted.
My concern, in terms of asking me my religion, would be my answer creating some bias or trigger a ‘lecture’ about what I ‘should’ believe. And I’m not paying a co-pay for a lecture. I came in for medical help.
Thank you for writing this. Issues of sexism and ignorance — demonstrated at the hands of people who should be trusted and professional — needs to be exposed. I’m thankful you DID get the help you needed, but the dismissive cardiologist should have lost his license and privilege to practice.
